The first dedicated children’s hospice in Northern Ireland, Horizon House is shaped in a gentle arc, curving into a landscaped garden with all of the patient rooms facing South–West, each with its own private patio. Requiring great care and attention to the design of the building and surroundings, a single corridor links all the patient rooms and the curve avoids any impression of an institutional corridor. Apart from the children’s individual rooms, provision is made for a Chapel, quiet rooms, activity areas, therapy rooms, treatment rooms, play areas, multi–sensory rooms, nurses station and GP rooms as well as a hydrotherapy pool and jacuzzi. A ten–bed unit with family accommodation and administrative and fund–raising functions – the domestic– feel building wraps around the entrance and gardens providing a sense of shelter and enclosure. The site is extensively landscaped with distant views across the Valley Park to Belfast Lough and beyond.
