Kennedy Fitzgerald Architects LLP

Belfast based practice founded in 1960

Overview Project Details

The first phase of refurbishment work is now complete at St Bernadette’s Church in Belfast. Built in 1967 to the designs of P & B Gregory Architects, the Church is B+ listed due to its national and international interest and is distinguished for its use of innovative construction techniques on a scale which is extremely rare in Northern Ireland.

The current project involved the replacement of all of the main dalle de verre panels, reusing over 25,000 pieces of solid coloured glass, to provide a subtle grading of the colour spectrum, reflecting the path of the sun throughout the day. The project also included a new suspended heating system, improved access and facilities for disabled users, new bespoke Nave and Altar furniture, pew and kneeler refurbishment, Baptismal Font relocation, thermal improvements, replacement of existing flat roofs and minor external works. Completed in February 2016, the project has been described as an exemplar scheme by the NIEA Historic Buildings Unit.
